If I did a line drawing of my chest as I saw it in the mirror this morning, I swear it would turn out like the Mighty Hercules. These ripples are great. I can't wait to go back to the beach this summer and get that guy who kicked sand in Helen's face.
I saw a documentary recently about the historic Jesus that filled in a lot of gaps for me. It's called The Last Days of Jesus, I think. The presentation was so-so, but the information was very good. Jesus might well have been on the way to becoming the next high priest. As such, he'd have had the support of ruling authorities (Pilate and Herod). This may have given him the freedom to disrupt the temple when he entered Jerusalem. A possible distortion in the timeline of the gospels would also be corrected by moving Palm Sunday back several months to the more likely festival of Tabernacles, which accompanied the palm harvest. On this date, the overly ambitious Roman administrator, Sejanus, fell to the emperor Tiberius. Suddenly anyone connected with Sejanus was doomed. Both Pilate and Herod had enjoyed Sejanus's favour, so neither lasted much longer than Jesus. To undo the effect of Sejanus's administration, Tiberius insisted on a return to traditional rule. This might have been the legal leverage used by the high priests in the gospels when they said to Pilate, in so many words, 'if you do not help us you are no friend of Caesar.' By this time, it was around the Passover, and enough time had elapsed for the imprisoned Jesus to be safely done away with. It all makes sense and I'm inclined to believe it.
My faith in Jesus is not diminished by such findings. My faith lies more in the spirit of his sacrifice for humanity. Even his teachings merely represent him as a man. I may sometimes err in overestimating their significance. But Jesus, whoever he was when he was here, has helped me through some tough times in my life.
